Orla Shanaghy is a qualified translator (Master of Arts in Translation Studies, Dublin City University (1999)) with over eight years' professional experience. Before establishing herself as an independent professional in 2004, Orla worked for several years as a translator, translation coordinator and technical writer at the software giant SAP in Germany, and as a technical writer and editor at the multinational telecommunications company Ericsson in Ireland.
Orla is a professional member of the Irish Translators' and Interpreters' Assocation (ITIA) and a member of the Bundesverband der Dolmetscher und Übersetzer (BDÜ) (German Federal Association of Interpreters and Translators). She also holds a Bachelor of Arts in German and English from Trinity College Dublin (1997).
Alongside her translation work, Orla also speaks and writes on the subject of professional communications and translation. Examples of her work in this area include a presentation to the Department of Applied Languages and Intercultural Studies at Dublin City University on careers in technical writing (1999); a presentation to a local businesswomen's group on effective PR writing (2004); and an address to the AGM of the Irish Translators' and Interpreters' Assocation on the independent translation profession (2006).
